Special Education

Mr. Ashmus

Tom Ashmus

My name is Tom Ashmus and I am the new 8th grade Special Education Teacher. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2017 and this will be my 5th year in the teaching field throughout various grade levels. I graduated with a degree in Physical Education but soon found my place in the special education department. I was previously a  paraprofessional at Lakeland School in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Prior to Lakeland School I was a Teacher at the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

There are many reasons I chose to teach in the Whitewater Unified School District. Most of which are stories from past employees who couldn't say enough good things about the district and the way they were treated during their stay. I am also excited to be back in the small town that I called home for many years.

Outside of work I like to travel and explore. I have been to 45 states as well as 33 national parks. Some of my favorites have been Yellowstone, Zion, and Carlsbad Caverns. I have a 2-year-old daughter, Azlyn, with my amazing partner Laura. As a family we like to go to the splash pad, the park, and take the occasional hike!

I am delighted to part of the Middle  School Staff. This is  my 20th in Whitewater School District. I joined the Whitewater District staff after a friend shared some of the innovative approaches to learning her kids experienced. I've stayed with the district because of the high level of enthusiasm, creativity and support I have experienced both as a teacher, and for the students.

I am providing speech services at  the Middle School  and for itinerent speech students.  I have experience in serving students with multiple disabilities, including articulation, language delays, autism, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, hearing impairment and apraxia.  I have worked in a number of surrounding districts and bring these experiences to help my students.

I reside in Fort Atkinson with my husband, Bob,   This summer we spend time traveling around Lake Superior. I enjoy living history, reading, crafts, traveling and gardening. I am also known to be a rabid Packers fan, win or lose!

I can  be reached at the Middle School every day at 472-8325.  Please feel free to leave messages on the voice mail and I will return your calls.

The best way to reach me is by email. I encourage families I work with to have an ongoing dialog with me so that we can best meet the student's needs.

Students receive speech therapy by meeting state and federally determined criteria. Services are provided in combination of either a 'pull out' or classroom inclusion setting. Assignments may be given on an individual basis.

Hi! I'm Mrs. Young. This is my 5th year at Whitewater Middle School and my 8th year as a special education teacher. I attended UW- Whitewater for my undergraduate degree and started my teaching career as the seventh grade special education teacher at Whitewater Middle School in 2014. I spent two years in that role prior to relocating to Chicago for my husband's job. Whitewater has always held a special place in our hearts and after three years in the big city, we decided to move back! I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to rejoin the Whitewater community and the Whitewater Middle School team.

Outside of school I enjoy being outdoors, cheering on Chicago sports teams, reading, watching netflix and spending time with my family.

This year I will be teaching co-taught math with Ms. Helmick and 7th/8th grade pull out Math.

I am looking forward to the 2021/2022 school year!
